Learning continues at NTSIS

2020-03-13

Despite of the outbreak of Covid-19, learning continues to be our priority at NTSIS. Not going to school physically does not prevent our students from learning regardless of where they may be. Our passionate teachers adopted a variety of online collaborative platforms to engage learning and connect with each child. Online learning is definitely a new frontier, yet it is this willingness to adapt and adopt new strategies that pushes everyone’s boundaries and brought about fruitful collaborations . It has also strengthened our learning community. Here are some examples of  Grade 1 and Grade 2 students bringing us on their journeys of online learning.

Learning together with Grade 1 & Grade 2

Due to the covid-19 alert, from 10th of February 2020, online and home-based learning started for our classes. Students were scattered in different parts of China and other countries such as Japan, Thailand, Korea and India. Teachers, parents and students took on the challenge with a lot of enthusiasm and after a few weeks, they have already gotten used to their daily tasks and schedules.

Everyone is excited for their first Zoom class & Group Learning

Love of reading never stops in Grade 1 and Grade 2 students.

Grade 1 has been working on unit of inquiry on How We Organize Ourselves, focusing on maps. The students have been exploring maps and maps features. They have learnt about the 4 cardinal directions and grid coordinates which were incorporated into our language learning and math lessons. The students made maps of their bedrooms, barefoot island maps, treasure maps, and even attempted to make their own D.I.Y. compass.

Grade 1 Harper created her barefoot island map to show what she learned about map keys

Both Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes have been run individually and in online group lessons. Students have had reading assignments, poetry reading and recitation, differentiated math activities, math games, video clips, using Brainpop and doing own research to complete information tables and weekly spelling tests.

Grade 2 Yukino doing further research and building her project
Grade 2 Kayla giving feedback on her solar system

It has been a challenging time for all and the parents and students need to be commended for all their efforts and support that they have shown in aid of continued learning. Parents have had to adapt and learn alongside their children as new programmes and ways of teaching have had to be learnt and tried, and have been amazing with their encouragement and support for their child’s learning.

The students have also been incredible and we need to praise them for their continued efforts in learning and striving to continue to learn in their journey of discovery of knowledge.

Parental feedback

We are satisfied with the online lessons. Special thanks to Mr Brett as his assignments to students were excellent and thoughtful. The quantity is appropriate and the quality is high. The students can complete a little every day. They can also given optional items which mean parents who want to stretch their child could do so.

Learning is ongoing and continues at Nantong Stalford International School.
