2020-03-18

Every great book is a portal to adventure, to knowledge, or to new perspectives. Beyond the required reading list in school, what books do students love to read? We asked several Nantong Stalford students from around the globe to share their books they have read during Covid-19 outbreak. Below, check out three great books recommended by and for students in Nantong.

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein
Grade 7 Jojo from Singapore

“Did you know that this book is in the teenagers must read top ten book list? The story is about a boy, Charlie who is living with mother, father, and grandpa. One day, the chocolate factory holds a contest where five Golden Tickets are hidden under the wrappers of his candy bars. Whomever finds them will win a daylong tour of the factory and a lifetime’s supply of Wonka treats. After several nearly- there moments, Charlie Bucket wins the fifth ticket. And thus begins the thrilling tour to chocolate factor begins!”

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein
Grade 8 Brian from Korea

“This book is a New York Times Bestseller. The main character Kyle is a class clown, popular with most kids and a fan of all kinds of games. One day, he hears a new town library will be opened. Kyle wins an invitation to the library for an overnight opening party; full of fun, food, books, movies and many, many of games. However, when morning comes, the doors to the library remain locked. Kyle and the other kids must solve every clue and every secret puzzle to find the hidden escape route. If you have read and enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this might be your next book on your list.”

The Little Prince by Antonie De Saint-Exupery
Grade 10 Harry from China

“I would like to share The Little Prince by Antonie. In the book, the Little Prince was looking for friendship. He describes search throughout his voyage from planet to planet, including Earth. I liked the character of the Little Prince; he was very curious, lovely, and pure. He reminds me of a child in our world.

My favourite quote from this book is, ‘…for me you’re only a little boy just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you do not need me, either. For you, I am only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, we’ll need each other. You’ll be the only boy in the world for me. I’ll be the only fox in the world for you.’

I would recommend this book to students of my age, to my Nantong Stalford friends as well as to all adults in Nantong Stalford community. It is a very eye-opening story where simple truths about what counts and what doesn’t count in life and how these are revealed. After all, The Little Prince reminds us that, ‘the best in life can often be found in the midst of the worst.’
