Singapore’s basic education ranks first in the world. What is the magic?

2020-04-09

The culture of Singapore is base on meritocracy and it is a country which only wants the best to serve as leaders. Therefore, it is a country where people aspire to learn and study hard.

Singapore attaches great importance to developing its own people. The education system in Singapore is conducive to the development of each student’s unique talents and interests. The education system in Singapore absorbs the essence of both eastern and western cultures and adopts flexible teaching pedagogies to cultivate and develop the potential of students. So far, its education system was quite successful. One of the biggest features of Singapore’s education is “bilingualism”. Language is the most direct form of communication in an increasingly interactive and diverse world. The language of instruction in Singapore for most schools is English, which children learn as their first language from kindergarten. But at the same time, all students have to learn mother tongue and for most of Singapore’s population, that means Chinese language. The Singapore government devote a big amount of the annual budget to ensure that the education system attracts the best students to become teachers. Only the best will get offered a job with the Ministry of Education and only then will they be sent to oversees education with scholarship and the National Institute of Education for teachers’ training.

With such high quality teachers in place, education in Singapore is leading the way.
