what does our students do during their break time?

2021-05-06

It has been about two weeks since our school reopened.  All teachers are back in school and Saturday classes have resumed. The entire school is actively involved in their learning. Children are interacting with each other. Conversations are focused on discussing ideas, plans and strategies. There is movement around the room with tools and equipment being independently gathered. All heads are together and collaboration is in the air.

Nantong Stalford Grade Five and Six students have gathered together during their break time to build the front part of an aircraft using cardboards in the classroom.

“Students did some research and reading from internet and books. They started building an airplane cockpit first – a compartment for the pilot and then moved on to build the cabin,” said homeroom teacher, Mr. Tan. “I enjoyed observing my students engaging in their learning as they displayed learner profiles such as inquirers, knowledgeable, open-minded, communicators and thinkers in the processes.”

“Hello everybody. This is how we fly a plane. It’s not simple. First, you will taxi (to operate an aircraft on the ground at low speed) to the front way. Second, you increase flaps just a little. Third, once you make it to the railway, you brake speed breaker to the max. Fourth, you talk to air traffic control tower. If they said yes, we are clear to take off. Fifth, throttles to max, flaps fifteen, then you wait. Sixth, once it says ‘V1 rotate’, you start to pull up the control wheel. Seventh, you put flaps back to zero. Eighth, you decrease throttles to 50 percent. Ninth, you put the gear up. Once you are in the air, you will change frequency. This is how plane takes off.

“Let’s move on to how plane lands. Now what you are going to do is flaps 40, spoilers max, decrease throttles to reverse thrust and put the gear down. Then, computer will say 500, 400, 300, 200, 100, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10. Once you hear ‘Retard, retard’, break max until plane goes into complete stop. Once the plane stops, put flaps back to zero, spoilers back to up and taxi off to runway and then the plane is now attached to a terminal,” said Grade Six student, Yanni.

Nantong Stalford always asks students for their input and ideas and create space for creativity and collaboration. Our school encourages a balance of flexibility in learning space and experiences to facilitate and promote inquiry learning, thinking skill, creativity, choices and decision making and independence in our students.
